I wanna be rid of the cable-modem (and possibly block Microsoft upgrades) .

As others have mentioned, you can connect an analog phone to an ATA (analog telephone adapter), and connect the ATA to your router. And you'll need to buy phone service from some company.

But I'm wondering about your comment about getting rid of the cable modem. Assuming you have cable internet, how are you going to get service without a cable modem? Or do you mean you just want to get rid of the one supplied by the cable company and use your own cable modem?

I'm guessing the cable company-supplied modem has an analog phone port or two on it, and you have phone service from the cable company. If so, if you want to use your own cable modem that doesn't have phone ports, you won't be able to use the cable company's phone service. But you can port your phone number to some company (others have mentioned voip.ms, which I've also used. I currently use 1-voip.com) and use an ATA as mentioned.
