We had a batch of office laptop with drives like this (although older and smaller) and they have some awful performance quirks if you do a lot of IO that effectively downgraded the performance to that of a standard 2.5in drive and sometimes even slower.

Just done some read performance tests on my samba server here. This is all on gigabit ethernet and using the transfer speed reported by windows explorer:

Read performance from SATA SSD(<Samsung SSD 860 EVO 1TB>):
70MB/s

Read performance from SATA HD(2x<ST4000DM004-2CV104> raidframe raid1):
Started at 50MB/s rose to 70MB/s by the end of the transfer.

CPU is:
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz

and the SATA controllers have max link speed of 3Gb. Ethernet controller is:
Intel i82541PI 1000BASE-T Ethernet

So this gives you something non-xen to compare to.
