The device you have booted from will typically not appear in that list.
Are you booting the usb install image and trying to install to a second
USB disk? That usually shows up as sd0 or sd1 (depending on device
probe order and the medium you did boot from).
A simple test case would be: exit the installer (so you get the # prompt),
unplug the disk you want to install to (you should get green kernel messages
telling you about the device disappearing) and then replug it again (green
messages will tell you which device got added).
If that does not happen, something is wrong with the device, and we need to
dig deeper.
