One way to workaround some of these issues is to force the less
demanding uxa accel method for i915, modesetting driver, or wsfb driver.
e.g. an xorg.conf like this:

Section "Device"
  Identifier "Intel Graphics"
  Driver "intel"
  Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"
