It is not a default option, so I expect it isn't present in the version from the binary repositories.
Thanks for the hint; I checked, and mutt as delivered by pkgin _did_ have sasl in its configuration, as well as smtp.

In short, and just from memory, I am using pkgsrc 2018Q4 and want/need to build the nouveau package. That build fails on inadequate version numbers of a couple of dependencies. I'm thinking I should cvsup pkgsrc to current and then try the build again. Make sense? (I've been away from NetBSD for several years...)
