on mpv it might nto pick the best audio output method by default.
you can choose which to use with e.g. --vo=xv

If you have intel graphics, getting vaapi may be good (hardware
decoding).

I seem to recall the mplayer failure is something in ffmpeg that is
i386 specific. I will try to reproduce.
