NetBSD and bridge(4)?

All,

on netbsd-7, when I create a bridge(4) device 

# ifconfig bridge0 create

and add the machine's nic to it, 

# brconfig bridge0 add wm0 up

all entwork activity stops until an

# ifconfig bridge0 destroy

-- what am I missing?
