Yes! I built a new kernel with that option (it would help if it would be 
commented in the kernel GENERIC.. this way it is a bit black magic) and 
both slots work now!

As I was at it, I upgraded kernel to 6.1.3 !

You wrote months ago that it probably was needed only for the 600E, but 
I "only" have a 600. (They don't make thinkpads as they used to... 
nostalgic note).
