Did you solve it yet?
There doesn't seem to be anything obvious in the dmesg, but the symptoms
sound a lot like what one gets when you feed one audio format to
something that expects another. Do you get the the same noise for any
program that uses audio?
What happens if you try audioplay(1) or audio/sox? (They should be
better at making sure everything is initialized; perhaps the sound
hardware just comes up in a different state in 6.0.)
