Iv'e only got a ML110 G4 here.

Can you please try a recent "netbsd-5" branch snapshot e.g. from here:

http://nyftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD-daily/netbsd-5-1/201107150920Z/iso/

The bge(4) driver was improved a lot after the NetBSD 5.1 release.
