wapbl (-o log) is suggested to replace softdeps, but I have had lockups
with it on a multiprocessor machine. (kern/41417) I have not seen the
same problem on uniprocessor machines so far.
I also hear rumors about background fsck coming over from FreeBSD,
perhaps someone here knows more?

I've been using NetBSD's software RAID implementation (RAIDFrame) since
1999 with great success on multiple platforms. it has allowed recovery
from hardware failures on numerous occations.
