I think this may have something to do with the culture of hardware 
manufacturers keeping hardware documentation secret. Sometime ago I was 
tinkering with programming Sun Creator3D framebuffer and it was impossible to 
get any decent documentation. This hardware was EOLed years ago, hardly anyone 
cares about it now and still years after Sun Solaris went open source, they 
only provide binary drivers and no hardware documentation.
