x11 font problem

On a NetBSD-current/i386, when I fc-list, I get far fewer fonts listed than
on an equivalent NetBSD-current/amd64 box. The odd thing is that when
running

  # fc-cache -vf

on both, the i386 box will say e.g.,

/usr/X11R7/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi: caching, new cache contents: 0 fonts, 0 dirs

whereas the amd64 box is rather happier with:

/usr/X11R7/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi: caching, new cache contents: 212 fonts, 0 dirs

Consequently /var/cache/fontconfig/e517d87a... is essentially empty for
i386 but has all the fonts listed for amd64.

The two 100dpi directories contain identical fonts.alias, fonts.dir, and
fonts.scale files (and appear to have the same contents) Both computers
have the same /etc/fonts/fonts.dtd and /etc/fonts/fonts.conf files.

Any idea where to look to find the difference?

Cheers,

Patrick
