...depending from situation i use dump / restore (as still mentioned here) or 
rsync (-a).
 
rsync's options allows you to easily manipulate or exclude disc content and - 
if required - copies over the net (i.e. over ssh). As dump / restore it is able 
just to copy differences (sync) if you have further changes on your source.

Some others users prefer tar | tar as a "copy" tool too - with compression if 
used over the net (i.e. by ssh).
