I have seen that before.  It's been like that for years, since at least
2.0.  

I never figured out why, or why the problem isn't more widely known.  It's
hard to imagine how it could be the usual thing -- the application making
some Linux assumption -- when fonts are handled in X, which NetBSD uses in
common with most Lunix distributions.  

It's not NetBSD specific, either.  I built Abiword for OS X and was
astonished to see exactly the same thing.  

It couldn't hurt to send them a few pictures.
