Hi,

To start kde.. there are two ways:

- Copy /usr/pkg/share/examples/rc.d/kdm to /etc/rc.d/kdm
- Insert kdm=YES into rc.conf

Then, kdm starts while your machine reboots.

Other way is as you mentioned... put startkde into ~/.xinitrc and type 
startx.


I prefer first one.
