can't su, but I can log in as root

Hi,

I just did an install of 4.0 on a PIII. It will not boot from my live CD
or any of the newer CDs. It did boot from the 2.0.2, since it was booted I
setup the drives. I then netbooted and did: pax -v -X -rw -pe / /mnt

It seemed to work fine, except I can't su to root. Yet, I can log in as
root from its own terminal. It looks like I will need to do a fresh
install (probably manually), unless someone has a better idea.
