The first thing is to make sure X starts. So X starts with startx?

XFree86 was removed from pkgsrc. XFree86 is available from NetBSD in x* 
distribution sets. pkgsrc has alternative: X.org (many xorg packages).

Maybe need to look in the /var/log/XFree86.?.log file. It may indicate the 
problem(s).
