I was getting this little problem too. I solved this by enabling not only
the AC'97 Sound but the AC'97 Modem too.

I'm having the same problem you described.

With "mixerctl -w outputs.master=0,255" sound becames good (with "mixerctl
-w outputs.master=0,150" I can't hear, too low).
