I guess it goes without saying I could test with heartbeat disabled,
which I'll do, but haven't got to get, as I've been running it further
with it enabled. I don't have anything very specific to say except that
it's evident that this only happens when X is running. I can run this
machine without X for days and beat on it with all CPUs active building
things, no issue. It can sit idle for half a day, start X and it almost
immediately panics. (This is a Skylake CPU, BTW, which I understand has
known architectural issues.)

PS since heartbeat is enabled by default, we should probably install the
heartbeat(9) man page. I can take care of that, if it helps.
