You havve audio0 (HDMI) and audio1 (Speaker, etc..) and need to
select.

audiocfg list

shows the devices.

audiocfg default NUM

selects item NUM from that list as default (for /dev/audio).

The alternative is to use e.g.:

mixerctl -d /dev/audio1 -a -v
