	The \ need to be \\ within double-quotes.  They simply
	vanish when used as above.


This, depeneds on the shell, I think. Only very old shells turn
_every_ '\char' -> 'char'. In POSIX shells, only some chars are
special after a '\' inside double-quotes:
	\\ -> \
	\" -> "
	\` -> `
All other instances of '\char' in a DQ-string are preserved.
