This appears to have been exactly the case.  Snippets from "Xorg.0.log"
w/o any "xorg.conf":

[687526.365] (--) intel(0): Integrated Graphics Chipset: Intel(R) G41

[687526.415] (II) intel(0): SNA initialized with Eaglelake (gen4.5) backend


I explicitly set:

  Option "AccelMethod" "UXA"

and it worked perfectly.  Once that was shown, I could then set:

  Option "TearFree" "false"

to save the performance penalty.
