False alarm. Three-wire serial using 4-wire modular phone cord through
a butt-connector. One RJ-11 plug has a weak latch and had come loose,
but I didn't notice it until I reattached the cables after booting a
GENERIC kernel.

Still need to investigate the situation regarding interrupts when using
the "com* at acpi?" attachment.
