Compiles fine for me, I had commented out the "fb" devices as well.

The switch to a graphical console is intentional, it is part of the
startup sequence of the new drm drivers.
The problems you are seeing are because the i2s part of the i915 drm
driver fails to detect either the ROM for the LVDS panel or an
external display.
I have an eeepc 701 that has the same problem.
