Now that I can play around with it a bit easier, I found that it's as
easy as this;

Put audio cd in drive
run "eject cd1"
close tray
try "abcde -d /dev/rcd1d -N" and see:

cd-discid: /dev/rcd1d: CDROMREADTOCHDR: Input/output error
[ERROR] abcde: CD could not be read. Perhaps there's no CD in the drive?
