You can just make a standard ISO and it appears on the desktop of
a mac as a disk.  When you open it with the finder, it shows the contents
and one can copy the contents from the ISO to another place.

I'm not sure if this will solve your problem, but if you just wanted the .dmd
to provide a container for other files, the ISO will work just fine.
