I had problems with one particular lot of Kingston Data Traveler 2 GB USB 
sticks, but only on NetBSD: OK with FreeBSD, Linux, even FreeDOS and 
OpenIndiana.

Error messages I got were different from yours, like "host adapter error".

There were at least two previous threads on that matter.

Maybe you need to set USB quirks, but this is a shot in the dark.
