Reading the code, I think the right fix is to #ifdef KERBEROS5 the
assignment of *argv to instance.  So instead of:

        if (*argv) {
                username = instance = *argv;
                ask = 0;
        } else
                ask = 1;

I would write

        if (*argv) {
                username = *argv;
#ifdef KERBEROS5
                instance = username;
#endif

                ask = 0;
        } else
                ask = 1;
