5.99.64 -current on amd64 fails to get to single-user

I just built a brand new kernel and modules from sources updated about 30 minutes ago. When booting the system, it got all the way to the

Enter pathname of shell or RETURN for /bin/sh:

prompt and then does nothing. A PS2 keyboard "works" (meaning that pressing Enter on the keyboard does cause the console text to scroll). But a USB keyboard does nothing. Also, unplugging the USB keyboard or mouse does not result in any "device detached" message.

An earlier 5.99.63 system was working just fine on this same hardware and with the same kernel config file.
