how to debug a USB problem?

I have a problem with connecting my Cowon iAudio X5 MP3 player to my
NetBSD laptop.

It used to work fine but at some unspecified time in the past something
happened (tm) to break it.  Now when I connect the mp3 player depending
on the USB port I use either the port times out, gets reset and is never
responsive after that OR on another port the MP3 player gets recognised
as a mass storage device which is correct but I get a BBB timeout error
and no device appears.  What do I need to do to get enough information
to either sort this out myself or give someone enough information to
point me in the right direction?
