I tried

  qemu -nographic -cdrom release/i386/installation/cdrom/boot-com.iso -boot d

and it fails for me, too, though I don't even see a "NetBSD/x86 cd9660
Primary Bootstrap" line - it just hangs.  This is with today's
-current sources 2011.01.04.12.44.48.  NetBSD 4.0.1 and a -current
from 2009.03.12.22.59.03 both work.
