PHYSMEM_MAX_ADDR vs crash dump

I was a bit surprised earlier today... One of my machines crashed, and it wrote a dump file. However, even though this machine's kernel is configured with

        options PHYSMEM_MAX_ADDR=4096

the crash dump contained a full 8GB of memory!

Is this expected?
