Well, I discovered that the SATA signal cable wasn't firmly plugged in; this has been corrected. Once again the drive is detected as ST506 with essentially no capabilities of modern disks.

Hmmm, it seems that I forgot to boot with -v -x before, so all of debug info got pruned. I grabbed another dmesg, this time with -v and -x specified.
