Ah, that explains the two hangs I had writing a DVD on Sunday.
Further problem was that the machine wouldn't boot after the second
hang, because wd0's block 0 seems to have died.
Using an install CD and scan_ffs, I got back the MBR and disklabel
(from /var/backups/work, thank you for that!) by finding the file
system again. Then I used fdisk to restore the MBR and install a new
boot loader.
During the next boot, all seemed fine until the kernel started, then
it had lost interrupts and ran into wd0 timeouts reading block zero.
I guess it might be broken hardware, or is there something in that
kernel version (amd64-4.99.72/20080910) that might cause such
symptoms?
