acpi power down not working - ASUS A8V Delux

I have an AMD64 X2 cpu on a ASUS A8V delux motherboard.

With a recent 'current' 'shutdown -p' doesn't :-(

The last message output is (something like);
        ACPI0: entering state 5
But the actual power down nevers happens.
The psu is still under acpi control (you have to hold the button in
for ages to get a power down).

This all used to work (with an acpi kernel).
