Those of us old enough to remember RL-02 removable 10meg packs will 
recall that BSD 4.[123] didn't initialize the heads silently, and after 
first insertion of the single platter disk (its a 14" behemoth) it always 
failed the first mount request, until it had retried and found the hard-
notch start segment..
