why build.sh and BSDOBJDIR /usr/obj does not exist, bailing...?

Looking through archives I see many have hit:
BSDOBJDIR /usr/obj does not exist, bailing...

Why doesn't build.sh default to just ./obj?
Or why doesn't it use topobjdir if not set?

tooldir is figured out fine so why not BSDOBJDIR too?

What is the argument against having a default?
