Unfortunately a -current kernel built with sources from CVS rsync'ed as of today (4.99.54) suffers the same kind of problem, though this time the process the process writing to ld0 is stuck in "physio" (not physio2). It did seem to get a little further along doing a "newfs" than the 4.0_STABLE kernel did, though that's a completely subjective observation.

The process is also still not interruptible in any way short of a reboot. Not good.
