actually, i have a .xserverrc that made this not the case, i
was running xsrc X server, but pkgsrc apps.  i can't get the
pkgsrc X server to work properly with that, eg, X complains:

MESA-LOADER: failed to retrieve device information
amdgpu: drmGetDevice2 failed.

twice.  it seems to be related to DRM_IOCTL_SET_VERSION
ioctl getting EPERM.
