For the record, I chose to resolve this by defaulting to misc-fixed (which has native bold variants) in xterm at lower DPIs. At higher DPIs, xterm can suitably 'enbolden' spleen that it looks readable. Allowing it to 'make fonts bold' at lower DPIs obfuscates the shape of letters too much IMO.
