Hmm. I tried it with my local NetBSD 9 install and it works without
problems. I check it with Net 8 anyway.

Could do You try a display section with explicit driver, i.e.:

Section "Device"
    Identifier    "Configured Video Device"
    Driver "vesa"
EndSection

?
