I have xf86-video-intel-2.4.2 from pkgsrc.

The first time I run xrandr, some parts of the screen flicker (it looks
like bad blits, as you said in another message), and I get one error
message:

(EE) intel(0): underrun on pipe B!

subsequent xrandr runs work fine, without making the screen flicker.

The other time that I see those "underrun on pipe B!" errors is when
I switch virtual consoles in wscons, via alt-control-F1 to switch out
of X11 and alt-control-F5 to attempt to switch back to X11. This bug
is reported at <http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17900>.
Interestingly, today I was once able to switch back and forth without
encountering that bug.
