For the system to think it knows better than the user is arrogant and
usually (nigh on invariably, in my experience) wrong.

In particular, whether erase should be ^H or ^? in xterm depends on
whether the user's fingers are happier finding the backspace or delete
key, which is not something the system can tell - except by believing
the user's configuration.
