MACHINE and "alias"

It's been a while since build.sh started providing "alias" - a unique,
filesystem-safe single string that corresponds to a unique pair of
MACHINE/MACHINE_ARCH.  For build tests, I use "alias" if defined,
otherwise MACHINE.  This works, but a bit inconvenient because this
"alias or MACHINE" concept has no official name.

How about calling this MACHINE_ALIAS?
