If we were discussing adding it as a new variable now then nothing, but I feel that it would be wrong to alter the behaviour of a variable that has existed for over 9 years now. If as a user I've set that variable to a specific value in mk.conf, then I expect that value to be used and for the directory that I've chosen to be populated, or perhaps that I can continue to pre-populate it and expect the pre-populated files to be used.
