For all practical purposes, WSL1 and WSL2 *ARE* Linux in the pure sense.
With WSL1 there are some quirks to deal with at times, so it seems a bit
more like Cygwin. But with WSL2, it is really easy to forget it is
anything but a Linux system (thin HyperV layer under WSL2). Either can
be pretty much any Linux distro you want, but the Ubuntu official image
appears to be pretty popular. I personlly run a home created ArchLinux
distro with WSL2.
