We know we're opening an existing file so we don't need to pass O_CREAT. Easy fix for the BSDs and not really a big heritage to carry along. What about doing this in a local patch in pkgsrc until they've sorted that out? I guess fixing the behaviour to fit the spec could be considered also for NetBSD 9 … but avoiding the whole thing like indicated above does look like a neat solution. Limping on with 4.13 it really not that favourable.
