Building a ruby-based package from git checkout?

All,

I am trying to package a ruby-based software, from sources obtained by 
<wip/mk/git-package.mk>.

While the fetch-from-git process does its thing nicely, the ruby/gem.mk 
mechanism then insists on downloading the gem, instead of using what is 
already in {WRKSRC}. And when I leave out the gem.mk import, the build 
process insists on (and does not find) a Makefile.

Has anybody used the git-package.mk with ruby projects?
