gimp vs vlc-3.0.2

I seem to recall a prior thread related to this either here or on
pkgsrc-users@.

Due to wip/vlc's alleged tool dependency on "sysutils/coreutils", one
cannot install both "graphics/gimp" and "wip/vlc". "graphics/gegl"
installs something as '/usr/pkg/bin/gcut' and "sysutils/coreutils"
expects to do the same (I presume a GNU-flavored version of 'cut').

I was hoping to see if 'vlc' would work on i386-8.0_RC2 and -current
since 'mplayer' is still having MPROTECT problems. It seems I must
choose either 'vlc' or 'gimp' (as well as "sane-frontends" and "xsane"
as collateral damage). And hope that 'vlc' or one of its dependencies
doesn't conflict with something else (as a dependency of vlc-2.2.6 in
"multimedia/vlc" does).

I've not been able to determine from where "wip/vlc"'s alleged tool
dependency on "sysutils/coreutils" comes. I don't recognize anything
in its Makefile or included fragments that would suggest such a dependency.

Short of eliminating vlc's dependency on "coreutils", I believe there
was a suggestion to rename "gegl"'s "gcut" so as not to conflict. But
that has implication for scripts, no doubt.
